From Events to Inclusion Rules
A short method for turning analytics events into segments people can trust.
Every durable segment needs an inclusion rule: the events, properties, and windows that qualify a user. Vague labels like “power user” invite disagreement the first time a campaign uses them.
Write the rule as if another analyst must rebuild it without you. Name the events, the lookback, and the exclusions. Then test edge cases—bots, staff accounts, incomplete installs.
Once the rule is stable, attach one primary metric the segment is meant to move. That pairing is what makes segmentation insight instead of decoration.
