Reading Segments Without the Noise
How to keep cohort labels useful when every tool wants another filter.
Segmentation fails quietly when labels multiply faster than decisions. A useful segment answers a question someone will act on this quarter—not every possible cut of the user base.
Start from decisions: pricing tests, onboarding paths, support routing. Then ask which user groups would change the answer. That reverse order keeps definitions thin and durable.
When a segment stops informing a decision, retire it. Archives are healthier than dashboards crowded with dormant cohorts.
